Retirement age
Entitlement to the old-age pension requires reaching the normal pension age AND holding the 15-year minimum insurance period at the same time. The age rises every year and is fixed by its own Portaria, published two years ahead — the table below shows the years published so far.
Normal pension age by retirement year
The normal pension age rises every year and is fixed by its own Portaria, published two years ahead (art. 20.º (9)). The table below shows the only two years published so far.
| Retirement year | Age |
|---|---|
| 2026 | 66 years and 9 months |
| 2027 | 66 years and 11 months |
At 66 years and 9 months, someone retiring in 2026 must also meet the 15 years minimum insurance period (art. 19.º).
No age is stated for any retirement year after 2027. Art. 20.º n.º 9 requires each year's age to be published by its own Portaria "no segundo ano civil imediatamente anterior" — so 2028's age is not yet published and cannot be looked up, and the formula it would come from (n.º 3) is not extractable from this instrument (see the schedule row note). A reader past 2027 needs a fresh Portaria, not an extrapolation.
Portuguese law does not grant a regime geral old-age pension on service alone, at any age. The 15-year prazo de garantia (art. 19.º) is always paired with an age condition, and every named route to earlier access — flexibilização, carreiras muito longas, atividades penosas, medidas temporárias, desemprego de longa duração (arts. 20.º–25.º) — states its own minimum AGE alongside its own service requirement.
