Quick calculation
Enter the monthly gross pay, the household situation and the number of dependents — the calculator instantly shows the take-home net, the social-security deduction and the IRS withheld at source, plus the total employer cost. The result is a ballpark estimate, not an official decision.
Gross salary before social security and income tax
Each dependent lowers the tax withheld; with three or more, a further 1 p.p. reduction applies to the top marginal rate.

Withholding table I — top marginal rate 24,1%. Tax withheld = R × top marginal rate − amount to deduct − (per-dependent amount × number of dependents), never below zero.
This is the IRS withheld at source each month. The annual settlement (liquidação) the following year reconciles the tax and may refund or charge the difference.
Notes on the calculation (2)
Mainland (Continente) tables. Madeira and the Azores approve their own reduced withholding tables — not applied here.
Portugal pays 14 salaries a year (holiday and Christmas allowances). Each allowance is withheld autonomously at the regular monthly rate, so the monthly take-home is unchanged.
In Portugal your employer withholds IRS at source and your social-security contribution from every payslip, so what lands in your account is already net. This calculator starts from the gross pay and deducts what is actually deducted.
The withholding is marginal — it depends on your household situation and dependents — while social security is a flat share of gross with no ceiling. This calculator shows how it all fits together.

How the monthly withholding works
Social security comes off the gross first — a flat share with no ceiling. The IRS withheld is then read from the marginal table for your situation and dependents.
This is the monthly withholding, not the annual settlement: the following year the IRS settlement reconciles it and may refund or charge the difference. Pay is delivered 14 times a year, but each allowance is withheld at the regular rate, so the monthly take-home is unchanged.

FAQ
Answers on net pay, the withholding and social security.
Why your net pay differs from the gross on the contract
The contract number is gross. What reaches your account is net — after social security and the IRS withheld at source.
The withholding is marginal, so a higher gross keeps a smaller share; the calculator shows exactly where each euro goes.
What the breakdown tells you
The distribution bar splits the gross into net, social security and IRS, so you can see where each euro goes.
The comparison only holds net against net — never gross against a figure from another country.
